Waterfowl Festival Algae Ink Making Workshop
Friday, November 13th, 2026

One Day Workshop: Friday, November 13th, 2026; 1:00pm-4:00pm
In this hands-on workshop presented in conjunction with the Waterfowl Festival and the Academy’s newest exhibition, From Sea to Shining Sea, Horn Point scientist Jennifer Gil-Acevedo will teach you how to use macroalgae and microalgae from the Chesapeake Bay to create your own sustainable watercolor inks. Along the way, you’ll discover the incredible variety of natural pigments produced by algae, learn about their ecological importance in the Bay’s ecosystem, and explore how science and art come together through these vibrant colors. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have your own algae-based inks to paint with and a deeper appreciation for the remarkable algae of the Chesapeake Bay.
For ages 10 to 100, taught in both English and Spanish!
