New Ways of Seeing: Optics, Geometry, and Perspective in Renaissance Art–Of all the artistic innovations of the Renaissance, linear perspective may be the most consequential and long-lasting. Far more than a handy device for putting pictures together, perspective was part of larger conversations about optics, geometry, rationality, and the goals of painting. Works by Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, and others will help us understand this union of science, philosophy, and art.

Benjamin C. Tilghman is associate professor and chair of Art + Art History at Washington College and a member of the Material Collective, a collaborative working group of art historians that explores innovative and more humane modes of scholarship. A specialist in Medieval, Renaissance, and Islamic art, he previously worked at the Walters Art Museum and is currently chair of Chestertown’s Public Arts Committee.
