Meg will help you simplify and translate your subjects to create more dynamic paintings. In this “visual bootcamp” the student will be introduced to a variety of exercises to improve skills in seeing color and value. The process of “seeing” in a thorough, analytical way will add to your understanding of different types of subject matter, and increase your skill in finding the maximum impact from the scene to be painted. Students will experiment with color relationships, limiting values, and compositional elements of painting. Meg will be using oil, but pastel and water medias are fine. This class is open to all levels of artists who are familiar with their medium. See Meg’s work at

Cadmium Red Medium

Ultramarine Blue

Yellow or Gold Ochre

(If you don’t have these exact colors, please bring a version of these primaries plus black and ochre)


We will be doing exercises rather than finished paintings, so you may want to work on inexpensive panels, gessoed paper, or a canvas pad. Bring enough for four exercises each class---the sizes could range from 6x8 to 12x16. The first day we will use the smaller sizes for value studies.

If you are using paper or unstretched canvas, you till need bring tape and a backing board.


Bring what you normally use. I like bristle flats or filberts sizes 4-8


Please use Gamsol, a container, and a small palette cup

Palette knife

Rags or paper towels

Small sketchbook and pencil or pen
