Portrait Drawing from Life takes the concepts and skills developed in Foundations of Portrait Drawing and applies them to drawing from a live model. Brad will guide students through all stages of portrait drawing, from sighting, composing and blocking-in, establishing the planes and rendering form to bringing a portrait to completion.  The class will also explore using different drawing papers, charcoals and graphite as well.

Drawing board with clips, 23"x26"
News print pad, 18"x24", rough texture
Willow Charcoal, Medium size.
Charcoal pencils:
General's HB, 2B, 6B and a white charcoal pencil

or Primo HB, B, 3B and a white charcoal pencil

or Wolf Carbon, 2B and 6B plus a General's Soft Carbon Sketch pencil and a white charcoal pencil
Paper blending stump
Kneaded eraser
Snap-off utility knife or razor blade to remove pencil wood
Several squares of paper towel
Sanding block or a 150 grit, Large Sanding Sponge (from a hardware store, home center)
Pencil extender(s) (like General's "The Miser" or Koh-I-Noor's "Pencil Lengthener"
Leather Artist Chamois
Old cotton T-Shirt cut into squares, 6"x6" or so.
Faber-Castell Perfection Pencil eraser (or similar)
Small container (1quart paint container at Lowes) or quart yogurt tub for catching charcoal dust
Sketchbook (400 series Strathmore Sketch, 400 series or similar)
2B graphite pencil
(optional for handouts) Plastic binder for standard lined notebook paper
One sheet Strathmore 500 Drawing Paper*
One sheet Rives BFK*
One sheet toned Strathmore 500 Charcoal paper*
*These sheets of paper won't be needed until the last three classes.
