What makes a strong and interesting composition in a work of art? This class will begin with a review of the fundamental elements of design including shape, line and texture engaging students at an intermediate level. Students will create multiple studies, brainstorm and share sources of inspiration with the class while gaining some collaborative experience. Selected works and perspectives from the history of art will serve as the core of our discussions, revealing some of the more complex principles of design such as scale, balance, pattern, and rhythm. An emphasis will also be to see and render compositions in the abstract sense. This class is open to students/artists of all levels who have taken basic drawing and who wish to advance their knowledge of successful compositions.
