High School Internship Application

High School Internship Program
Apply through Monday, November 15, 2021
Online Application

The Academy Art Museum is pleased to announce a new initiative: Paid Teen Internships! This program will offer 10 local high school students the opportunity to learn all about museums and answer the following questions: Why do museums exist? How do they function? How do they enrich communities? Interns will engage closely with the Director of Children’s Education and Community Programs, Constance Del Nero, and a special teaching artist, Jason Patterson, to learn the nuts and bolts of museum operations. The program will begin in January 2022 and run for two hours once a week for about 30 weeks. Instruction will involve in-person and Zoom lessons along with field trips to artists’ studios and other museums. It will offer students the chance to engage hands on with museum learning, all while gaining valuable skills for future studies or the workplace. Culminating events will include designing and offering a teen night to be held at the Museum to acquaint peers with what they have learned and a series of teen-led docent tours for groups of 10 family members and/or peers. We are looking to recruit teens who are seriously interested in learning about museums and committed to working for the duration of the program. Pay will be $12 per hour. The application is due Monday, November 15, 2021. Apply here.

Instructor bios:

Constance Del Nero was born and raised in New York City. She is a versatile artist who works in many media: graphite, colored pencil, acrylic, oil, collage, assemblage, and clay. She believes that human beings are creative by nature and that the process of exercising creativity feeds an inner need. Her credo is that the world is full of wonder, and it is the artist’s job to unlock and share that wonder with others. She has worked as an educator, artist, and professional illustrator. She currently serves as Director of Children’s Education and Community Programs at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, MD.

Jason Patterson hails from Champaign-Urbana, IL. He is a history-based artist in Chestertown, MD, whose artwork focuses on African American history and centers around the Black history of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. His practice consists of portraiture, woodworking, and the recreation and reimagining of historical documents. His work is heavily research-based; often the history Jason highlights isn’t commonly known or has not been well contextualized in the past, and his work aims to better establish this important history. Jason has been a visiting fellow and art instructor at Washington College and is currently a fellow with the Chesapeake Heartland Project and a board member of the Kent Cultural Alliance (formerly the Kent County Arts Council).
