
Pastel Painting: Techniques and Applications

PAINTING STUDIO
The focus on this four-week session of Katie’s pastel classes will be fine-tuning the many techniques of pastel paintings. The student will practice the many varieties of strokes and “mark making.” An introduction of the many-colored grounds for pastel and underpainting techniques will be addressed and demonstrated. The class is open to students of all levels and experienced students will be encouraged to work on individual projects. Maximum of 6 students.
Basic Pastel Supplies
drawing board or foam core for backing on easel
small sketch pad for studies
vine charcoal or graphite pencil for studies
Pastels: soft pastels (not oil pastels) – set of 60 or more. Rembrandt sets of half-sticks are a good basic brand. Also, a good set of Unison in basic colors is good.
Papers: Canson Mi-Teintes paper pad, grey tones size 12″ x 16″ if you are working on paper. If you are working on sanded papers, Art Spectrum in neutral colors or pastel board in grey, brown, or green, size 11″ x 14″. No white or buff colored papers please.
