In this class, Brad introduces the classic “next step” after portraits in charcoal: Adding a ‘warm’ color and ground to ‘cool’ black and white and drawing aux trois crayons, or “with three chalks”. So many masters, from da Vinci to Rubens to Renoir, used and perfected this technique and the results approach the effects of full color. This class is a wonderful, perhaps essential, avenue for transitioning from drawing portraits to painting portraits. This classic limited selection of colors makes it much easier to develop the sense of warm and cool transitions so critical to good portrait painting. Classwork will involve working with a selection of pencils, sticks and papers, working from both casts and live models. There will be a small materials fee for special paper.
