Students & Teachers
These hands-on programs provide students the opportunity to express themselves in new ways and create long-lasting friendships and memories.
ArtReach
Free • Pre-K - 12 Students
ArtReach provides schools and community groups meaningful field trips in conjunction with our exhibitions. A typical ArtReach experience includes a gallery tour and a related art or language arts project tailored to meet individual groups’ needs. AAM also pays for transportation costs for students in Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, or Queen Anne’s counties.
Have Art, Will Travel
Free • Pre-K - 12 Students
We know that it’s not always easy to book field trips. Have Art, Will Travel (HAWT) is a free program designed to bring the Museum to the classroom. A Museum instructor brings a reproduction of a work from our Permanent Collection to area schools, discusses the work with students, and then engages them in a related art project.
Museums in the Museum!
Free • Pre-K - 12 Students
The Museums in the Museum! program teaches children how a museum functions, asks them to consider what their ideal museum would look like, and helps them create their own miniature “museum” in a diorama box. We finish the program with a celebratory pizza party.

Mini Masters is an early enrichment program for children ages 2–4. Our museum-based curriculum blends exploration of art with basic principles of early learning. In addition to general monthly themes, we implement an emergent curriculum that allows children to explore topics and materials as they relate to their own interests. Using a multi-sensory, child-centered, and inquiry-based approach, we foster creative and independent thinking, self-expression, art appreciation, and a love of learning. The Mini Masters program takes place in a mixed-age classroom that provides an environment for fostering community and encouraging developmental and academic milestones.
We can help teachers and fine arts supervisors plan a low-cost in-service day for teachers in their school or district. Art and elementary classroom teachers have the chance to learn new tricks, talk art, swap project ideas, and come away from a workshop with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
Each school year, 10 local teens will have the opportunity to work at AAM, engaging closely with Museum staff and learning the nuts and bolts of museum operations. What better way to create a new generation of museumgoers than to involve high school students in a hands-on, in-depth program to develop their understanding of how museums enrich communities? Apply for the 2024-2025 session here.
Our annual Portfolio Night offers area high school students the chance to receive expert tips on what makes a winning portfolio from a panel of art school representatives. This evening is ideal for high school seniors who are considering applying to art school and underclassmen who would like to get a leg up on preparing a strong portfolio. Sign up here for the December 4 session at 6 pm.
Our Annual Mid-Shore Student Art Exhibition is the largest and most prestigious on the Eastern Shore. Every year, K-12 art teachers from Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, and Queen Anne’s counties submit a variety of their students’ best work. The next Student Art Exhibition will be on view from March 15–April 14, 2024. Stay tuned for more information.
Each year, the Museum selects art students from one area high school to learn what it’s like to be a curator. Students work together to select artworks that resonate with them from the Permanent Collection, come up with a theme, and pair their chosen pieces with artwork of their own.
