Opening Reception, More Clay: The Power of Repetition
Thursday, September 4th, 5-7pm

Please join us for the opening reception of More Clay: The Power of Repetition. The seven artists featured in More Clay build powerful ceramic sculptures through accumulation, repetition, and innovative feats of construction. Their works transcend the structural limitations of clay and abandon the material’s traditional association with function. Abundance is their mantra: Less is not more.
Repetition is an essential part of clay and pottery, from slip-cast molds to wheel-thrown duplicates. Architectural marvels, from ancient Syrian beehive houses to Djenne’s giant Mosque in Mali, are all built from clay multiples. Informed by this heritage, these artists invent fresh ways and means to defy gravity, transforming this humble, sustainable material into something monumental in form, scale, and content.
More Clay is curated by Rebecca Cross and was first presented at The American University Art Museum at the Katzen Center.
