ACADEMY CRAFT SHOW
20TH ANNIVERSARY

October 20-22, 2017

FIRED UP!

The Eastern Shore’s only juried craft show.
Can it really be 20 years since the Academy Art Museum gave birth to the first Craft Show, introducing our community to beautiful American crafts that normally were seen only on ‘the Western Shore’? The first Craft Show gave birth to an event that now highlights 70 artists, each recognized locally and nationally as being the best of the best. What started out as an idea is now one of the Academy’s most successful and joyful events for attendees, local businesses, and, importantly, the artists.  Treasures exemplifying quality at every price point, allowing each attendee to find that special piece of art! In addition, we attract Talbot County residents as well as guests who return for their annual weekend getaways.

Visionary Artist & Honorary Chair

Bennett Bean

Bennett Bean is a quintessential American polymath. He is best known as a ceramic artist (for his treatment of vessels post firing); but works in a range of media including stone, precious metals, wool and silk weaving, paper, parchment and painting. He was formally trained in fine art and has been making things, prolifically, since 1960, full time in studio for that last 25 years. His work is represented by numerous galleries as well as in major museum collections nationwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the White House Art Collection.

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Museum’s Painting Studio
FREE!
Sponsored by: Bruce Wiltsie & Bill Davenport
The Academy Art Museum Craft Show features 14 ceramic artists.  Their beautiful works will “Fire Up” the imagination of our young attendees.
Our little crafters, ages 5+, will shape their own clay creations using magic model mud, an air-dry clay – no firing necessary.  Colored Sharpies and decorations will allow the artists to create their very own clay masterpiece! The ready-to-display take-home artwork will be a permanent keepsake of your fun-filled day.
The FREE drop-in Workshop will be in the Museum’s Painting Studio from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 21 and Sunday, Oct 22. Museum staff will be on hand to assist where needed.  Moms and Dads will have a child-free hour, or two, to explore and shop.
Reservations are not required. The Little Crafter’s Workshop is a FREE, drop-in benefit to all families attending the Academy Art Museum Craft Show.

Mobile Raku Demonstration & Class

Sponsored by: Carolyn Williams & Colin Walsh, Tom & Alexa Seip, Tricia & Frank Saul
A Ceramics Studio on Wheels
Like most great ideas, Mobile Raku was born out of necessity. While teaching classes at schools and institutions, Brett Thomas had a following of students, “regulars”, who were eager to fire at every chance they got. They would bribe him to do extra firings before or after class.  Eventually the class became non-stop firings. Brett had to take some of the firings out of class so that there was still studio time. He is not one to disappoint my students so Brett developed “Mobile Raku”. By assembling a studio and kiln, Brett created Mobile Raku, a ceramics studio on wheels.  He can travel to any location in the continental U.S. The mobile studio has everything that is necessary to conduct a raku workshop. Mobile Raku allows Brett to teach at all levels, from children to adults, as well as a wide variety of skill levels.
We are thrilled to have Brett at The Academy Craft Show to provide demonstrations and conduct on-site lessons.  Please reserve your spot!
