Successful paintings have a hierarchy of shape that attracts the eye. Assembling shapes is how painters make depictions of reality that convince the viewer. Thinking in shapes will allow the artist — even the most dedicated realist — to move beyond painting “things” to thinking abstractly. In this workshop students will analyze paintings and learn how artists use shapes to make impactful designs. Through demonstrations and exercises, students will leave with a new understanding of how to make almost every painting work.
