PASTEL PAINTING: VALUE AND COLOR

Wednesdays, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.

The focus of this session is the importance of value and translating values into color for more beautiful pastel paintings. Katie will review all the basics and introduce some new ones, especially layering to create new colors and glazing for greater luminosity and vibration of colors. The class is open to students of all levels and experienced students will be encouraged to work on individual projects. Maximum of 10 students.
drawing board or foam core for backing on easel
small sketch book for thumbnail studies
vine charcoal or pencil for drawing
soft pastels (not oil pastels) – set of 60 or more. Rembrandt sets of half-sticks are a good basic brand
– set of 60 (or no smaller than 30) Do not buy the cheap pastels at Michaels (they do not have a good brand) I also will have pastels to lend for this class.
Paper towels – Viva signature is a good brand
Canson Mi-Teintes pad size 12 x 16 in grey tones or any of the good sanded papers available at Dick Blick or Dakota Art Pastels, Call me if you need help with this.
