This class is ideal for students with some basic drawing skills who are interested in learning the unique attributes of graphite in still-lifes, landscapes, or portraits. Information will be shared on how to use graphite as a medium and the range of effects that can be achieved by using different forms (pencils, powder, water-soluble) along with tools and techniques to create drawings that appear three-dimensional. Students will also learn simple methods to create portraits with graphite. Naomi will give demonstrations and tailor feedback to meet students’ needs. Minimum of 5 students, maximum of 8.

Material List:
- Foam core, gator board or drawing board, big enough to hold pages from your sketch book
- Selection of graphite drawing pencils, woodless graphite, or mechanical pencils – 2H HB, 2B, 6B at a minimum
- White charcoal pencil
- Paper blending stumps/tortillions, various thicknesses
- A few sheets of paper towel
- Sketch pad of drawing paper (9×12 or 11 x 14 suggested) – you can bring newsprint sheets if desired
- Kneaded eraser, white plastic eraser (optional Tombow Mono Zero eraser for small areas)
- Pencil sharpener and/or utility knife with snap-off blades or other preferred tools to sharpen graphite
- Sanding block or sandpaper (220 grit) – optional for additional graphite sharpening
- 1 or 2 small watercolor brushes (for blending and use with optional water-soluble graphite stick)
- Water Soluble graphite stick (if interested in exploring this technique) and small water container with lid (example: 1 quart yogurt container or 1 quart paint cup from Lowes)
